Aged Care Insurance

Aged care insurance for providers of residential aged care, home care and supported residential services: resident injury, care-related claims, buildings, boards and lost income.

Contact Us

Aged care insurance is cover built for the organisations that run residential aged care homes, home care services and supported residential services. Most providers need several policies working together: liability for resident injury, professional indemnity for care decisions, management liability for the board and property cover for the buildings. Fortis Risk Solutions arranges these as one program and checks each wording against how your service actually runs, so a gap shows up before a claim does. When a resident or family makes a claim, we help you lodge it and deal with the insurer. Setting up a new service or coming up to renewal? Call 03 7046 3766 or send an enquiry.

What Aged Care Insurance Covers

Aged care insurance covers the liability, property, management and income risks of organisations that care for older people, including residential aged care homes, home care providers and supported residential services. This page is for providers. If you are a family member looking for cover for a parent moving into care, this is not that product.

The risks follow the care. A resident falls on the way to the bathroom at night. A medication error or a pressure injury turns into a complaint and then a claim. A home care worker breaks a client's heater or is hurt in a client's home. A kitchen fire or burst pipe closes a wing, and residents have to be moved at short notice.

Government-funded aged care providers are regulated by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and report serious incidents under the Serious Incident Response Scheme. Supported residential services in Victoria are registered with the state Department of Health. Leases and service contracts commonly ask for proof of public liability insurance. Business interruption insurance can pay lost income and ongoing costs while a damaged building is repaired.

Fortis Risk Solutions arranges aged care provider insurance as part of our business insurance range, from offices in Box Hill and Hawthorn. We look at the types of care, bed numbers or client hours, staffing and the buildings before approaching specialist insurers. Clinics and health practices that visit aged care homes are usually placed under medical practice insurance instead.

Aged Care Insurance FAQs

It is for providers. Aged care insurance on this page protects the organisation that delivers care: its liability to residents and clients, its buildings and equipment, and its board. Families paying for a parent's care do not buy this cover. Questions about fees and accommodation payments go to the provider or a financial adviser.

Public liability and medical malpractice or professional liability are the core, because resident injury and care-related claims are the main exposures. Most providers add a business insurance package for buildings, contents and equipment, with business interruption on top. Workers compensation is separate and compulsory for employers. Organisations with a board should also hold management liability.

Yes, when the policy is written for home care. The liability section responds to injury to a client, or damage to their property, caused by your staff during a visit. Staff who drive between clients in their own cars create a motor gap, so check how your vehicle arrangements fit with the policy. Declare any personal care, nursing or meal services you provide.

They can be. Directors and committee members can face claims over governance, employment decisions and regulatory investigations. Management liability insurance is designed to cover defence costs and, depending on the policy wording, some insurable penalties for the organisation and its officers. Not-for-profit boards are not exempt from these claims.

Yes. Where the provider owns the home, the building sits under commercial property insurance with a sum insured based on full rebuild cost, including demolition and professional fees. Where the provider leases, the lease decides who insures the structure and who insures the fit-out. Read the lease before renewal so nothing is insured twice or missed.

Aged care wordings differ on abuse cover, medical malpractice, regulatory costs and how incidents must be notified to the insurer. As your broker, FRS helps you disclose your care types and incident history accurately, structure limits across liability and property, compare the specialist insurers that write aged care and act as your advocate at claim time. We work for your organisation, not the insurer.
