What Complex Business Insurance Covers

Complex business insurance covers the property, the income, the liability and the governance of businesses that outgrow a packaged policy: high net worth businesses with substantial assets, corporate groups with several entities, businesses operating across borders, companies holding high value property, plant or stock, and any organisation whose risks do not fit a standard form.

The exposures are large because the assets are. A single fire, theft or storm at a high value site runs to a figure that would close a smaller business. In a group, one entity's incident reaches the others through shared premises, staff, systems and supply chains, and a claim can land on the wrong company. Operating overseas adds the laws, the contracts and the insurance rules of each jurisdiction.

The governance exposure grows with the structure. Directors and officers face claims from shareholders, regulators, customers and employees, and management liability insurance for a group has to name every entity. A cyber incident in a business holding customer data, financial records and commercial secrets brings recovery costs, legal costs and business interruption at once, and cyber insurance has to be sized for the whole group.

Fortis Risk Solutions arranges complex business insurance for groups and high value businesses across Australia from offices in Box Hill and Hawthorn, as part of our business insurance range. We map the entities, the sites, the contracts and the jurisdictions, then build one program with a specialist insurer for each part. Property and interruption usually start with industrial special risks insurance.

Who this covers

Large or complex structures need one program rather than a set of policies. The notes below set out each type.

High net worth businesses

Substantial property, plant, stock and vehicles under one ownership. Industrial special risks for property and interruption, liability limits sized to the balance sheet, and directors and officers cover for the people who own and run it.

Multi-entity corporate groups

Several companies sharing premises, staff, systems and suppliers. One program naming every entity as an insured, with limits set for the group, intercompany arrangements declared and acquisitions added when they are bought.

Multinational businesses

Operations in more than one country, each with its own insurance law. A master policy in Australia with local policies where the law requires them, so claims are paid locally and the gaps between jurisdictions are closed.

High value asset holdings

Property, equipment or collections whose single-loss value runs to a figure that would close a smaller business. Valuations, escalation clauses, agreed values and a property wording negotiated for the assets rather than taken off a standard form.

Businesses with complex risk exposures

Unusual processes, contractual structures or regulatory settings that do not fit a package. The program is built from the risk map up: which entity carries what, which contract demands what, and which specialist insurer writes each part.

Complex Business Insurance FAQs

When the declared values pass what a packaged business insurance wording will carry, when more than one entity or site has to be insured together, when contracts demand limits a package cannot offer, or when the business operates outside Australia. The signs are familiar: several policies with different renewal dates, gaps between them, and a claim where two insurers argue about which policy responds.

A property wording that covers damage from any cause not excluded, rather than a list of named events, across every declared location, with business interruption insurance written into the same schedule. The perils, the excesses, the escalation and the indemnity period are negotiated for the business. It is the usual base for high value sites, multi-site groups and any operation where a packaged property section is too small.

Under one program that names every entity as an insured, so a claim against the wrong company is still covered, with public liability insurance limits and sums insured set for the group rather than per company. Shared premises, shared staff and intercompany arrangements are declared, and the structure chart goes to the insurer with the submission. A new acquisition is added when it is bought, not at the next renewal.

Each country has its own insurance laws, compulsory covers and rules about whether a foreign policy can respond there. A multinational program combines a master policy in Australia with local policies where the law requires them, so a claim in another jurisdiction is paid locally and the gaps between the two are closed. Contracts with overseas customers and suppliers set further requirements, including professional indemnity insurance for advisory work delivered abroad.

Because they can be sued personally for the decisions of the group: by shareholders, regulators, employees, customers and liquidators. Directors and officers liability pays their defence costs and any settlement, and a group policy covers the boards of every entity. Where the structure is complex, the policy has to say which entities and which people are insured, or a claim will find the one that was left out.

A complex program is a set of negotiated wordings, not a product off the shelf, and every placement has to line up with the others. FRS helps you map the entities, sites and contracts, structure the limits and the retentions as one program, place each part with the insurer that writes it best and act as your advocate at claim time, when the size of the loss makes the wording matter most.
