Psychologist Insurance

Psychologist insurance for private practitioners, counsellors and mental health clinics in Melbourne: professional indemnity, public liability, client records and the rooms you work from.

Contact Us

Psychologist insurance matters as much to a contractor in a group practice as to a clinic owner, since each practitioner usually needs their own professional indemnity. The clinic or landlord you rent rooms from will often want a certificate of currency for public liability as well. Fortis Risk Solutions checks that the wording covers the work you really do, including court and employer reports, telehealth sessions and supervision of provisional psychologists. We look at cover for lost client records and arrange run-off cover when you stop practising. If a complaint becomes a claim, we help you notify the insurer early. Have your registration details ready. Call 03 7046 3766 or send an enquiry.

What Psychologist Insurance Covers

Psychologist insurance covers the professional indemnity, public liability, cyber and practice risks of psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health clinics in private practice. It brings the policy your registration depends on together with the cover a practice needs as a business. A sole practitioner, a group clinic and a practice that works mostly by telehealth each need it set up differently.

Claims in mental health practice rarely start with a slip on the floor. A client alleges that an assessment or a treatment plan caused harm. A report written for a court, an employer or an insurer is challenged. A complaint to a regulator needs a legal response. A laptop full of session notes is stolen, or an email reaches the wrong client.

Registered psychologists must meet the Psychology Board of Australia registration standard for professional indemnity insurance arrangements, administered through AHPRA. Professional indemnity insurance is the policy that answers that standard when you practise outside an employer's cover. Public liability insurance covers injury to clients and visitors in your rooms, and most leases ask for it.

Counsellors and psychotherapists are not registered through AHPRA, but professional associations, employers and referrers commonly ask for proof of cover. Fortis Risk Solutions arranges psychologist insurance as part of our business insurance range from offices in Box Hill and Hawthorn. We check the lease, the records system and any contract work before we approach insurers. Larger multidisciplinary clinics often fit better under medical practice insurance.

  • Client case: Stolen Laptop Creates a Data Breach

The client situation: An employee’s business laptop is stolen while travelling. The device contains locally stored client files and confidential information.

How the policy may respond: Cyber Insurance may assist with investigating whether information has been compromised, breach response, legal advice and required notifications, depending on the policy terms and security controls in place.

How Fortis Risk Solutions helps: Insurers ask about encryption and device security before they offer terms. We go through those questions with the client first, so the cover holds when it is needed.

Every policy is different and the outcome of a claim depends on its terms. As your broker, Fortis Risk Solutions compares insurers and policy wording before you buy, and lodges and manages the claim for you when something happens. Talk to us about your own cover.

Psychologist Insurance FAQs

Professional indemnity arrangements are a condition of registration. The Psychology Board of Australia's registration standard requires registered psychologists to have appropriate professional indemnity insurance arrangements in place when they practise. Employer cover can meet the standard for employed work. Private practice, contracting and supervision outside the job usually need your own policy. Public liability is not compulsory but is standard for anyone with rooms.

Counsellor insurance is usually professional indemnity and public liability on one policy, with contents and cyber available as options. Professional indemnity responds to claims that counselling caused loss or harm. Public liability covers injury to clients in your rooms. If you see clients by telehealth or in outreach settings, declare that so the wording matches the way you work. Group sessions and workshops should be declared as well.

Most practices should consider it. The Privacy Act applies to health service providers regardless of turnover, and the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme can require you to tell affected clients and the Information Commissioner about a breach. A cyber insurance policy can cover breach response, notification costs, data restoration and some liability, depending on the policy wording.

Yes. A clinic carries risks the individual practitioner does not: the lease, the reception team, a shared records system and contractors working under the clinic's name. A business insurance package covers contents and equipment, and management liability covers the owners for employment and governance claims. Each practitioner still needs professional indemnity for their own work.

Business interruption insurance pays the gross profit you lose and the costs that keep running, such as rent and wages, while the practice cannot operate after an insured event like a fire or water damage. Sessions you keep running by telehealth reduce the loss, so the claim is worked out on what you actually lost. Choose an indemnity period long enough to find and fit out new rooms.

Professional indemnity wordings differ on retroactive dates, run-off, court and report work, and cover for regulator complaints. As your broker, FRS helps you disclose your services and settings accurately, structure limits for your registration and contracts, compare insurers that write mental health practice and act as your advocate at claim time. Social workers and psychotherapists in private practice are assessed the same way.

For a registered psychologist, the starting point is professional indemnity that meets the Psychology Board of Australia's registration standard. Beyond that, policies differ on details that matter in practice. Some include defence costs for a complaint to the regulator, others limit them. Run-off cover after you retire or close the practice also varies. If you keep client notes electronically or offer telehealth, check how a privacy breach would be handled. We look at these points across insurers for practitioners and clinics.
